{"id":1425,"date":"2014-06-28T21:26:32","date_gmt":"2014-06-29T02:26:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fortmarinus.com\/blog\/?p=1425"},"modified":"2014-06-28T21:36:48","modified_gmt":"2014-06-29T02:36:48","slug":"the-sundering-of-christendom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/fortmarinus.com\/blog\/1425\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sundering of Christendom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #9c8a6a;\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><em><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: #9c8a6a;\">&#8220;I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you [&#8230;]&#8221; &#8211; 1 Corinthians 1:10.<sup><a href=\"#footnote_0_1425\" id=\"identifier_0_1425\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Bible Gateway: 1 Corinthians 1:10\">i<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today, there are about 2.2 billion Christians worldwide <sup><a href=\"#footnote_1_1425\" id=\"identifier_1_1425\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Pew Research: Global Christianity Report\">ii<\/a><\/sup> and over 350 Christian movements or denominations<sup><a href=\"#footnote_2_1425\" id=\"identifier_2_1425\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Rough count of the member list of the World Council of Churches\">iii<\/a><\/sup>. Much ink and blood has been spilled regarding these divisions. <\/p>\n<p>Those who are slightly familiar with the history of Christianity may recall at least three major historical events:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1st century: The Founding of the Church<\/li>\n<li>11th century: The Great Schism, separating Orthodox and Roman Catholics<\/li>\n<li>16th century: The Protestant Reformation, separating Protestants from Catholics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A cursory glance at history suggests that the Christian church was basically a homogeneous body until the Great Schism. To some extent, this is true after the 4th century, when Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity in the Roman Empire<sup><a href=\"#footnote_3_1425\" id=\"identifier_3_1425\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Wikipedia: The Edict of Milan, AD313\">iv<\/a><\/sup> and Emperor Theodosius made it the official State Religion<sup><a href=\"#footnote_4_1425\" id=\"identifier_4_1425\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Wikipedia: The Edict of Thessalonica, AD380\">v<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>However, upon further inspection, one will find that the situation is not so clear. The chart below illustrates historical origin of the various Christian groups or branches who claim to be descended from the State Religion of the Late Roman Empire. Technically, these churches claim to be (or be a part of) the \u2018one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church<sup><a href=\"#footnote_5_1425\" id=\"identifier_5_1425\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"Wikipedia: Four Marks of the Church\">vi<\/a><\/sup>. <\/p>\n<p>The scope of this illustration is restricted to the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Churches, The Oriental Orthodox Church, the Church of the East, and certain other relevant historical communities. The chart notably excludes the Protestant groups, including the Church of England. It is also lacking a thorough examination of pre-Constantinian Christian communities.
